Hello,
Thanks for looking at and trying these scripts. I hope you find them useful and informative.
To use these scripts yourself you’ll need a couple things:
• System 7
• The AppleScript Extension 1.1, the Event Manager Extension, OSA Menu, and the Scripting Additions Folder. They are provided on this disk for you to use. Drag the *contents* of the "Place in Extensions Folder" folder into the Extensions folder in your System folder (this includes the scripting additons folder. Put the folder itself in the extension folder as well. Do not open the Scripting Additons folder and empty the contents! Place it in the Extensions folder in the System folder, as is.) They are provided on this disk for you to use. If you want to open and edit the scripts though, you'll need the AppleScript Script Editor which you must purchase as part of the AppleScript Package. This is available from most software vendors including MacConnection and MacWarehouse. The files included will run the scripts, you just won't be able to edit them unless you have the Script Editor. Copies of each script saved in a text format are included on this disk. These may be opened in a word proccessor or any program that will import a standard text file.

• For the box guide placing script you'll need QuarkXPress version 3.3. This is because a bug in 3.2 caused guides to be place exactly 1-point off. If you want to adjust the script you can add a point in the formula so that it will work with 3.2, otherwise it'll be slightly off.
The other scripts "should" work fine in 3.2

• To be on the safe side, try these scripts on non-essential documents until you've established that your system is setup properly and that the scripts are compatible with your setup. Although I've gone to great lengths to try to make these scripts as error free as possible -you use the scripts as is, no guarantees are made. (necessary disclaimer here) Should you have any problems, please contact me at the on-line address below with your comments, suggestions, or problems.

To use these scripts, FIRST READ the OSA read me, then load them in the OSA menu as per the instructions, and they’ll be available at any time in QuarkXPress. Just select them and watch what happens! Or you can run them from the Applescript Script editor (if you own AppleScript, and I highly recommend the purchase). If you choose to do that note that you'll see all the actions of the script. When a script is run from a menu, QuarkXPress delays to screen updates until the script is done-a big difference.

The scripts included are:
Guides • Guides to box 1.7 -This places guides around any selected text or picture box. Just select an single box and run the script by selecting it from the OSA menu you've installed.
Guides • Toggle InFront/Behind- will set the guides to show either in fornt of objects or behind them
Guides • Toggle Lock/Unlock - will set the guides to be locked or unlocked
Guides • Toggle On/Off - will set the guides to show or hide
Text • Change Style Sheets - allows the user to change every occurance of a style sheet in a document to another style sheet. To use, select the script form the OSA menu and you will be presented with a list of the style sheets used in your document. They will be numbered. Note the number of the style sheet that you want to change as well as the number of the style sheet to change to. In the second dialog type the *number* of the style sheet to change, then type a *comma*, then the *number* of the style sheet to change to. Press OK and in seconds, it's done and will beep twice. This is a useful script and if you open it you will notice it is rather involved with repeating statements and loops. Those are necessary to check for incorrect input from the user.

If Applescript is something you’re interested in learning more about, then buy Danny Goodman’s excellent book, “The Complete AppleScript Handbook” published by Random House (0-679-79148-5) for $35. It’s the best thing I’ve read on the subject of AppleScript.
There’s not much material on the nuances of writing scripts for XPress, so to aid you in your search for XPress scripting nirvana, I’m releasing my new disk,

• creating grids of guides, picture or text boxes
• reporting font usage of a QXP document by dragging it over an icon on the desktop
• auto importing images from a folder into your layout
• finding font usage in a document by dragging the file icon over a script droplet
• slugging your layout and later auto-importing images and text files
• placing guides in exact locations
• converting numbers to text
• hyphenating or capitalizing text
• numbering paragraphs
• setting text box insets
• placing crop marks around a box
• shrinkwrapping picture boxes to the image they contain
• linking selected boxes and importing a text file into the new chain
• and many more production tools and examples.
Each script can be opened, examined for syntax and procedures, and copied (unless you think of a better way to write the example). They’re excellent learning material for beginning and intermediate XPress Scripters as well as being useful tools for everyone, scripters or not! And they’ll work with the soon to be released ScriptIt XTension. The examples included here are from that disk.
